Jayson Tatum Calls for Jersey Retirements for KD, Warriors Core
Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum has called for the Golden State Warriors to retire the jerseys of Kevin Durant, Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, and Andre Iguodala from their championship run.
"Those guys deserve to have their jerseys retired," Tatum said. "They accomplished so much together and brought so much joy to the Bay Area. They changed the game of basketball and inspired a generation of players. I think it's only fitting that their jerseys are retired."
Durant, Curry, Thompson, Green, and Iguodala won two consecutive NBA championships and three NBA Finals appearances together from 2017 to 2019. They are one of the most successful dynasties in NBA history and are widely considered to be one of the greatest teams of all time.
Tatum's call for jersey retirements is not surprising. He has been a vocal admirer of the Warriors core for many years. In a 2020 interview, Tatum said that he was "inspired" by the Warriors and that he wanted to "build a dynasty" of his own with the Celtics.
The Warriors have not yet announced whether they will retire the jerseys of Durant, Curry, Thompson, Green, and Iguodala. However, it is likely that they will eventually do so. The team has a history of retiring the jerseys of its legends, and the championship core from 2017 to 2019 is certainly worthy of the honor.
Jersey retirements are a rare honor in the NBA. Teams typically only retire the jerseys of their most iconic players and coaches. To have one's jersey retired is a testament to their greatness and their impact on the franchise.
If the Warriors do retire the jerseys of Durant, Curry, Thompson, Green, and Iguodala, it will be a fitting tribute to one of the most successful dynasties in NBA history.
